A 24 cm Victorian non-reactive serving ladle, featuring a crystallized organic horn handle, hand-peened domed brass rivets, an integrated brass reinforcement plate, and intact mother-of-pearl geometric inlays, circa 1880 ish. I have researched and researched this piece and while my first instinct was that it couldn't be antique as it is not broken, everything points to it being the real deal. It has uneven brass rivets with a brass backplate for strength and the rivets are slightly domed, not flat, which apparantly was more common in the late 1800's. I have found an identical one on a high end antiques store website listed for several hundreds of dollars. Originally it would have had a matching fork and been used for serving acidic or sulfuric foods that would tarnish and damage silver, such as viniagarette dressed salads, egg based dishes and anything with citrus. The Nacre (Mother of Pearl) non reactive spoon bowl is also naturally flavour preserving, so it doesn't taint the taste of the food.
